When a woman gives birth, there is a hormone secreted in the body to facilitate easy childbirth. This hormone relaxes the pelvic muscles. The dictionary meaning says about relaxation; " to make less close and tense. To loosen..." In this way, there is relaxation. In order to derive the ultimate benefits of the power of relaxation, we'll have to take into cogniscance the essential relaxation of our minds as well. Indeed, we could not hope to relax for any appriciable length of time without first being mentally relaxed. Some people are known to relax their minds so well that they don't need anaesthetic drug to have their tooth extracted. The basic benefits of true relaxation are far reaching.
Many of us are not truly relaxed, even though we may lie on a couch and do nothing. Our minds are filled with a lot of unrelated clutter. One moment we are thinking how rotten the weather is today, and then we think about how someone puked on our new suit at the party last night. The lout! Then it is about the pending bill for the electricity, and how money is short. Then all of a sudden, there comes this issue of you and your partner. "This woman truly has no respect for me. How could she say this to me. I'll show her when she comes home". Then you think, "how about a pint of beer". No, no. A double scotch will do! If someone came into the room without knocking and said, whoa!, we would certainly get a mild cardiac seizure or even a serious one depending on our health and age.
We are not relaxed. Relaxation is about loosening up our thought patterns and stop taking ourselves too seriously. However, there are techniques we can apply to relax better and more. One of the secrets of relaxion is to watch your breath all the time. Watch yourself and be aware as you breath in and out. As you do this all the time, you will also notice how shallow you have been breathing. Be aware of you breathing. Maintain this attitude for a week and see how beneficial it is in maintainig a less anxious outlook in your thinking.
Together with watching your breathing, watch your thoughts as they come and go in your head. Most of them are simply negative and won't do you any good. If you can't dismiss these thoughts, simply watch them. Watch them as you would watch a monkey in a zoo cage. Prancing about. Doing this and that, and then nibbling at some morsel and suddenly jumping onto a trestle. Just watch and observe. Don't judge. Be aware. Be present and acutely conscious. You'll be amazed how relaxing is this attitude. The tension of your body muscles will lessen and loosen up.
All theories have to be put to a test to be validated. Try this exercise and you'll almost change your outlook on life overnight. It is truly amazing what the power of relaxation can do for you.
